Fathers for Femininity

Event Details

  • Date:

By age 12, many children become set in their beliefs. Caring and invested educators and parents can unintentionally perpetuate anti-feminine bias when they leave unquestioned the default masculine approaches to thought stemming from larger, often accidental, cultural narratives. Not talking about the cultural biases surrounding gender and femininity reinforces them in young children. However, talking about them encourages the development of the positive attitudes and skills needed to advocate for gender justice. This is why the Philosophy for Children initiative at LaGuardia Community College has partnered with the CUNY Fatherhood Academy and Transformative Learning in the Humanities to create an interactive workshop for CUNY parents and educators of young children. Please join Profs. Cheri Carr (LaGuardia Community College), Jesus Benitez (Hunter College and City College), and David Ortiz (LaGuardia Community College) in creating a “Community of Philosophical Inquiry” to both model and explore in an open, supportive conversation how we can foster gender inclusivity through our relationships with children.
